How to Go to Madame Tussauds Bangkok 2021

Unless you’re a major Hollywood superstar, what are the chances of you taking selfies with Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Madonna, and a hundred other celebrities all in one day?

In Madame Tussauds museums, not only will you meet Hollywood A-listers, you will also get to rub shoulders with world leaders, sports legends, and even Her Majesty the Queen. It’s no wonder that while other tourist attractions come and go, Madame Tussaud’s legacy has been around for more than 250 years!

Nowadays, Madame Tussauds museums are often associated with fun and entertainment, but hiding behind all that glitz and glamour is a rather bizarre past.

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum was founded by Marie Tussaud, a native of France. At the tender age of 16, she learned the art of sculpting from her mother’s employer, Dr. Philippe Curtius, a skilled anatomist and wax maker.

During the French Revolution, Marie was thrown into prison, where she was forced to make plaster casts of beheaded victims of public executions, including the King and Queen of France. She had to put the bloody heads on her knees as she took impressions of their features. The finished works were then paraded through the streets of Paris, as a proclamation of revolutionary victory.

After the revolution, Marie left France to showcase her collection around Europe. She finally settled down in London, where she opened a waxworks business that later became the first Madame Tussauds museum.

Here are more fun facts about Madame Tussauds Museums:

  • The museum suffered a fire in 1925 and many figures were lost. Fortunately, the molds remained intact and several pieces were recreated.
  • During WWII, the museum was hit by a bomb. A total of 350 head molds were destroyed.
  • The first overseas branch of Madame Tussauds opened in Amsterdam in 1970.
  • There are currently 24 Madame Tussauds museums around the world.
  • It takes six months, more than 250 precise measurements and photographs, 20 skilled artists, and up to $300,000 to make each of Madame Tussaud’s wax figures.
  • It is considered a great honor to have your figure immortalized in the museum.
  • Each subject is invited for a sitting to get the right body measurements. If the subject is a deceased person, a team of researchers will check hundreds of pictures to get the measurements right.
  • All wax figures in Madame Tussauds have their hair washed and makeup retouched regularly.
  • Madame Tussauds Bangkok was opened in 2010, as the third Madame Tussauds in Asia.

What to Expect at Madame Tussauds Bangkok

I had always been curious about Madame Tussauds museums, and knowing that there was one in Southeast Asia really excited me.

However, there are some places that are simply not so fun to visit alone — wax museums being one example. You’d want someone to take photos of you with the sculptures, and surely you don’t want to keep asking the other visitors.

Since I usually traveled on my own, I had to suppress the desire to go every time I happened to be in Bangkok. So, when my partner agreed to come with me to the city, I was ecstatic.

Part of the entrance to the museum was undergoing some renovation during our visit, so it looked a bit shoddy with plywood covering some parts of the floor. It didn’t give me a very good first impression, and to be honest, I was starting to wonder if this was going to be worth our money.

But once we stepped inside, I felt a lot better. We were first greeted by the (former) King and Queen of Thailand. Each Madame Tussauds museum in the world would feature some of their own local personalities, so if you go to Madame Tussauds Bangkok, expect to see a few Thai big names.

The exhibition is divided into 9 zones. This is the updated list of celebrities you’d see in Madame Tussauds Bangkok:

As Bangkok attracts many visitors from other Asian countries, you can also see celebrities from those countries, some of whom might not be very famous internationally. But don’t worry — the majority of the figures in Madame Tussauds Bangkok are of world-renowned people. And in any case, there are descriptions of each one of them if you’re not sure who it is you’re taking a selfie with.

I forgot to check the descriptions of these two though. Not sure who they are.

The exhibits in Madame Tussauds are designed in such a way that allows visitors to interact with the celebrities. Unlike other museums or art galleries where you’re not allowed to touch the artworks, here you can touch and hug them all. They even provide special props to help make your photos more interesting.

There are also some interactive zones where you can dance, sing karaoke, shoot a basketball, and play mini golf. At the end of your visit, you’ll get to watch the super fun Ice Age 4D movie, “No Time For Nuts”.

The cinema comes with 4D glasses, moving seats, and all kinds of special effects. The entrance to this cinema is included with your ticket.

Final Thoughts on Madame Tussauds Bangkok

I think we spent close to two hours at the museum. There were not many people around, so we were able to take as much time as we wanted with each figure.

Is Madame Tussauds Bangkok worth visiting?

Yes. I don’t know how it compares to other Madame Tussauds around the world, but personally I had a lot of fun. It was so cool to be able to stand next to each celebrity and to know that that’s their real size. (Nicole Kidman is so tall!)

Madame Tussauds Bangkok is not cheap by Thai standards, but considering that this is an international chain and that it’s the only one in Southeast Asia, I think it’s worth the money, especially if you live in the region.

Madame Tussauds Bangkok looks so much fun! I went to the London one a long time ago but I’m definitely due another visit! It looks like a great attraction to visit in Bangkok and a great way to spend an afternoon. Thanks for sharing the great guide!

    • ummi

You’re welcome, Hannah! I had a lot of fun, and it was really a great way to spend an afternoon, especially if you go with a friend or a group. Perhaps you should revisit that London one and see what new figures they have. 😀

  3. Julia

I went to the Madame Tussaud’s in London and have always wondered how it compares to other Madame Tussaud’s. Sounds like each one might have country specific and then the “international renown” group. London had Princess Di and the rest of the royal family, for example!

    • ummi

Oh that sounds so cool, Julia! I’d love to visit the one in London and ‘meet’ the royal family. In Bangkok, they have Queen Elizabeth. 😀

    • ummi

Yes, Cass! My partner and I had a good time laughing at each other at the wax museum. It’s certainly a place you need to go with a friend or in a group.
