Crazy House Dalat Vietnam - Most Unique Attraction in Da Lat
Located in an idyllic mountain town in southern Vietnam is a surreal piece of architecture fit for a fairy tale. The Crazy House is probably the most unique attraction you can find in Dalat, Vietnam.
Inspired by Antoni Gaudi’s creations (one of which is the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona), this psychedelic work of art is not only a tourist attraction, but is also a guesthouse where you can spend the night in a tree trunk with spiderweb windows and a life-sized kangaroo or eagle sculpture on the wall!
The Crazy House (a.k.a. Hang Nga Guesthouse) is the brainchild of Dr. Dang Viet Nga, a famous Vietnamese architect and artist who received her PhD in Moscow.
Dang, daughter of the late General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party, has designed several other buildings in and around Dalat, one of which was the “House with 100 Roofs”. Unfortunately, this building was burned down because it was deemed anti-socialist by the People’s Committee.
Dr. Dang began her work on the Crazy House in 1990, with a mission to bring people closer to nature — to love and to be kind to it, instead of just taking advantage of it.
She wanted to create something truly original, groundbreaking, and unlike any other on the planet. And she sure did.
The finished work is an avant-garde fairy tale house with labyrinths of narrow bridges, spiral staircases, hidden caves, and twisting tunnels. There are practically no straight (read: boring) lines, both inside and outside the construction.
The Crazy House had to be built from scratch, and in the process, there had been times when funds ran low. That was how Dr. Dang got the brilliant idea of selling tickets for the public to come and explore the house.
So, you’re welcome to get yourself lost in the maze or climb all the way up to get a view of the entire complex from above. There are also plenty of nooks and crannies where you can sit down and rest, including a cafe that sells drinks and snacks.
How to Get to the Crazy House, Dalat
The Crazy House is located just over 1.5 kilometres from Dalat city center, and is easily accessible. Every taxi driver should know where the Crazy House is. Or for convenience, you can use e-hailing apps like Grab.
I like to use Grab Bike to get anywhere in Vietnam, because it’s cheap, safe, and I don’t have to explain the directions to the driver. But since my hostel wasn’t too far from the Crazy House, I simply walked the few hundred meters.
